Após dez anos de estagnação, está sendo executando um Plano de Expansão da Rede Federal de Ensino Superior.
Aliado às necessidades produtivas locais, o plano contribuirá para a redução das desigualdades regionais, a ampliação e a democratização do acesso de jovens ao ensino superior.
Em cinco anos, a expansão deve gerar 125 mil novas matrículas nas Universidades Federais, principalmente nas regiões de interior sem acesso a universidades públicas.
Desde 2004, o programa já criou 10 novas Universidades Federais e implantou ou consolidou 48 campi universitários, em todas as regiões do país, um crescimento de 24,65 % no número de IFES
